Frequently asked questions about driveways
Do I need planning permission for a driveway?
In England you can normally lay a driveway of any size without planning permission if the surface is permeable, or if rainwater is directed to a permeable area within your property such as a lawn or border. Permission may be required if you lay an impermeable surface of more than five square metres and water would run off onto the road. We design drainage into every driveway so this is dealt with properly from the start. Always confirm your own circumstances with your local authority.
Which driveway material should I choose?
Block paving is the most popular locally because individual blocks can be lifted and relaid, so a damaged section can be repaired without redoing the whole drive. Resin-bound gives a smooth permeable finish but depends heavily on the base beneath it. Gravel is the most cost-effective and quickest to lay. Tarmac is hard-wearing and economical over larger areas. Concrete is extremely durable and low maintenance. We will walk the site with you and give an honest recommendation.
Why does the groundwork matter more than the surface?
Most driveway failures – sinking, cracking, pooling water and weeds pushing through – are foundation problems rather than surface problems. A well-laid drive on an inadequate sub-base will fail within a few years. We are a groundwork company first, which means the part you cannot see is done properly.
Can I park on a new driveway straight away?
It depends on the material. Block paving and gravel are typically usable almost immediately, while resin and concrete need curing time. We will tell you exactly what to expect before we start.
